I often listen to NPR and other podcasts on my MP3 player while I exercise or at night when I get into bed. Last night I had the pleasure of discovering Gretchen Rubin and her book The Happiness Project. This morning I discover she also has a blog.

Now....I am basically a happy person, but---Hey, couldn't we all use a few tools for staying that way? One tip she mentioned last night is that spending money on "stuff" is less likely to provide happiness than an "event" or experience. She means an experience like an outing, a trip, etc.
I can vouch for that. Husband and I are planning a trip to England in May. I find a lot of happiness in planning, going, and then reminiscing.

How will I know??
While I walk on the track at Milestone Fitness, I listen to podcasts that I have downloaded from NPR, NY Times, or Scientific American. This morning I heard an interesting and blogger-appropriate quotation.
"How will I know what I think until I read what I wrote." attributed to Scotty Reston, news columnist.

Living
Living Wills and Powers of Attorney.....Those were our tasks this morning. Husband and I are certainly old enough that we should have done this long ago. Somehow it is like the shoemaker's children who have no shoes. In this case it is the lawyer whose family have no living wills. Well we took care of that, and it is done now. .
Of course, we made each other our health surrogate and gave power of attorney to each other. If we are unable to serve, our son, age 31, is designated. I feel quite confident in him. One time a couple of years ago, I told him that I knew I had better be in my daughter-in-law's good graces since she would choose our nursing home. His reply, "No, she won't. I will, and I'll get the best." Just what a mother wants to hear.

Windows Live
I have been looking back at Windows Live. I used to have a very pleasurable blog there, but it has been changed so much that I don't even recognize it! It is sort of like Facebook....only the pages load v.e.r.y slowly.
My plan to use Facebook and then blog in more detail here is probably what I'll do in the future.

Genealogy
It is just like solving a mystery! There are lots of clues and false clues.
Peggy and Bobby, two of my cousins, and I have spent a good bit of today delving into our family history. Our family line is having a reunion over Labor Day weekend this year, and we are trying to organize the information for our segment of the family. The three of us are the grandchildren of siblings, in my case, my mother's father, Sam. He died in the 1918 flu pandemic when my mother was twelve.
Many of the young folks (ha!) of my generation have stayed in the area where the family lives in South Texas. It has really been interesting to see that I am related to so many people. I spoke with my aunt this morning. (She is my mother's sister and will be 96 in October.) She kept on saying, "Did you know that _____ is a DuBose?" I kept on saying, "No, I didn't."
My grandfather was one of eleven children, so there are lots of cousins.
Today Bobby said that he has a bunch of old papers that date back to the 1400's in Rouen, France. They indicate that a DuBose was the local sheriff when Jean d'Arc was burned at the stake for heresy and likely involved.
My, my. And to think that I was in that very square in Rouen where the burning took place. Who knew?

Not Facebook....
A blog seems a good alternative to Facebook. I find it very limiting only to be able to write a sentence or two.
Don't get me wrong. I love keeping up....even minimally...with my friends via Facebook. However, a blog can do that in depth.
Here goes!
